Photojournalism Artist’s Statement
My idea for this project for my Photojournalism seminar class at Sciences Po arose from two different games that I play with myself while walking through Paris. As an exchange student — practically a tourist in my own right, yet with a unique sense of intimacy with the city as a short-term resident — I like to try to guess whether someone on the street is a tourist or a native Parisian. I also find myself making up stories about strangers’ lives based on the scant details I can glean from their appearance or their passing remarks. Finally, I feel a sense of wonder as I go about my daily routine with some of the world’s most renowned landmarks in the background. From these musings, I created this project to capture the quotidien juxtaposed with the monumental. I’ve accompanied the photos with fictional, biographical sketches of the subjects, to continue our class’s semester-long discussion of where the lines blur between journalistic and artistic photography.
Palais du Luxembourg. She’s wearing black leather pants even though it’s 30 degrees outside for the first time in months. Some habits die hard for this former fashion editor. Besides, Parisians dress for the season, not the weather.
Les Librairies de Montparnasse. He teaches art at a nearby collège. On this breezy Sunday, however, he strolls past stands of used books, thumbing through a volume on theatre. Maybe he’ll work it into a lesson next week.
Sèvres-Babylone Métro. Her boyfriend gave her these flowers and asked her to forgive him. The bouquet is too big for her sad little studio apartment. She might forgive, but she will not forget.
Palais du Luxembourg. The sun is out in Paris, so people are out in droves. She’s just trying to get home with her groceries. She didn’t mean for her beret to match the flowers.
Jardin du Luxembourg, with a cigar. He promised his daughter he would give up smoking after his grandson was born. They’re visiting Paris for the weekend, so he’s come to the garden to smoke. His first grandson! He thinks they share a similar smile.
Pont Saint Michel. He walks across this bridge towards the Sainte Chapelle every evening; I recognize his green suede loafers and hunched back. He’s lived in Paris since before the buskers in front of the Fontaine Saint Michel had portable amps with which to play their backing tracks.
Église de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. He moves through the city selling poetry and watercolor. Maybe one day, he’ll self-publish a chapbook. For now, he befriends the tourists on their way to Café de Flore, and sometimes they give him a euro or two.
Église Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin. She sits in the shade and sighs. By the time she’s picked up lunch, it’s already almost time for her to get back to work. Students stream by, reminding her of what she could have had.
Quartier du Temple. She’s sick of Paris. The tourists are too much. She barely lifts her head from her phone anymore on her walk to work.
Pont Neuf. He’s just bought this book from a bouquiniste, an old friend of his, on the Quai des Grands Augustins. As I walk by with my camera, coffee, and a croissant, I can’t tell what he’s reading.
Pont des Arts. She’s meeting a client for coffee soon, but she’s stopped to soak in the sun and call her friend about their weekend. He’s leaning — just so — hoping to catch her eye. She won’t notice.
Quai Saint-Bernard. Her leg slowly slides behind her in a circle, while he holds her firm. They’ve been dance partners almost as long as they’ve lived across from each other on the Île de la Cité — going on ten years now. The sun is going down, but that won’t stop the music from playing, soft and low.
